DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NUTRACEUTICALS & DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
The fine line of difference between foods and core nutrients defines the imparity between nutraceuticals and dietary (food) supplements. Both definitions partially overlap. Nutraceuticals are “beyond the diet, before the drugs”, a concentrated form of a nutrient that may prevent the onset of an asymptomatic prolonged pathological condition. It is a whole food, not an isolated nutrient that is repackaged in a concentrated non-food format. Food supplements have added micronutrients, which can supplement the required nutrition of the body. (1) (2)

For example, Ipriflavone is the concentrated form of soy protein derived from isoflavone daidzein and is marketed as a nutraceutical. Whereas, soy protein is a dietary supplement.

What are Nutraceuticals?

Nutrients and pharmaceuticals are both a part of nutraceutical’s definition, which is derived from Phyto complex (vegetable sources) and metabolite complex (animal sources). These are pharmacologically active substances possessing therapeutic properties, and are naturally active. It is advisable to consume these products in drug delivery forms such as tablets, capsules, drinks, etc.

Nutraceutical products must be administered while taking safety measures, after knowing their constituents, bioavailability, and bio accessibility. It is a powerful toolbox to prevent or cure pathological conditions, however, it is not advisable for conventional pharmacological therapy. The absence of supra-national regulation for nutraceuticals is a challenge for this industry to establish as a therapeutic tool. (3) It can be classified into the traditional and non-traditional segments.

Traditional nutraceuticals are derived directly from nature without any change in its form. For example, Lycopene from tomato, Omega-3 fatty acid from salmon, etc. They include nutrients, phytochemicals, probiotics, and various enzymes. These works in the variant metabolic pathway.

Non-traditional nutraceuticals are derived from biotechnologically designed crops that are potent with nutrients. It includes fortified cereals that are enriched with added food value. It is also derived from processed or recombinant foods prepared by the application of biotechnological tools through the fermentation procedure for extracting the optimal level of nutrients.

Nutraceuticals may also be classified based on segments of antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. (4)

Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplement’s definitionis products that have more than one dietary ingredient, which supplements a balanced diet. It supplements the essential nutrients that one should derive directly from food, but fails to do soin natural conditions.

It is available in form of tablets, capsules, gummies, powder, drinks, and energy bars. Some major dietary supplement’s benefitsand types are:

  • Vitamin D and Calcium for strong bones.
  • Folic acid or Vitamin B supplement for the production of red blood cells.
  • Omega-3 fatty acid keeps the heart healthy and reduces the risk of any related diseases.
  • ARDES comprises of Vitamin C, E, Zinc, Zeaxanthin, Lutein, and Copper.
  • Vitamin K prevents blood clotting.

There are many other macro and micronutrients that are used in dietary supplements products.
