The pandemic has influenced anxiety, worries, frustration, isolation, economic crisis, emotion distress to the entire world’s population. It has created a dire landscape for mental health. Hence, we need to be more active in this segment.

  • 13% of all diseases are accounted for mental health problems.
  • WHO says in a report of 2018 that every 40 seconds, a person dies by suicide due to mental distress, annually, this is accounted for 800,000 people.

What is Mental Health?

Good mental health is one of the most important factors to remain healthy. Even being mentally healthy you may have some minimum mental health issues. However, if you can make most of your potential, cope with different situations of life, and play a full part with your relationships and surroundings then you are on the good part. (2)

Mental unhappiness, distress, fear, etc often come to all of us. If you can pass these feelings with time, you heal. In some cases, these feelings take a serious turn or heavily impacts the mental health.

The absence of significant diagnosable issues on performing mental health tests doesn’t certify that someone is mentally healthy. Good mental health enables an individual to perform certain key functions and activities such as:

  • Competence to learn.
  • Ability to manage emotions, expressions, and feelings.
  • Maintain healthy relations.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and uncertainties.
Stigma Attached to Mental Health

Most of the people are ignorant about the mental health unless it gets unavoidable. Physical ailments are always given priority over mental health. Many people are uncomfortable sharing their problems and opening up about them. Medicines aren’t always required, sometimes even just mental health counseling can help dealing with stress, anxiety, and mental unhappiness.

World Mental Health Day is celebrated on one day; however, it is not something that can be cured in a day. It is a prolonged process. World Federation of Mental health urges every individual to proactively understand the issues and address them with professional help in order to stop mental health diseases.

Types of Mental Health Symptoms

There are two types:

  • Neurotic symptoms – Severe general emotional expressions like depression, anxiety, panic, fear, etc.
  • Psychotic symptoms – In this stage, the perception of a person gets changed about reality and facts. Hallucinations about feelings, visions, and thinking are some symptoms. Bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia are extreme examples of this type.

The government has introduced many mental health acts to provide human rights to the mentally diseased people. Many NGO, governmental organizations, and other institutions are dedicated to providing support to these patients.(3)
