What are CVD and types?

CVD affect the function and structure of the heart. Various types of CVD are: (4)

  • Abnormal heart rhythms or Arrhythmias – A heart beats 60 to 100 times per minute, which is 100,000 times in 24 hours. When the heartbeat rhythm becomes irregular or dysrhythmia (too fast or too slow), then it is called abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias.
  • Aorta disease and Marfan syndrome – Aorta takes oxygen rich blood to all parts of your body. It is the largest artery of the human body. Sometimes it might tear or widen. This causes disorders like Atherosclerosis or hardened arteries, high blood pressure, and weakens other blood vessels’ walls.
  • Cardiomyopathies – It is a disease of the heart muscles and is also known as the enlargement of the heart. In such a condition, the heart pumps blood slowly, which may sometimes lead to a heart failure.
  • Congenital heart disease – It is a disease causedby a birth defect in the heart. It causes problems in various parts of the heart and blood vessels. It occurs genetically or due to a viral infection.
  • Coronary artery disease – It is the narrowing of the arteries supplying oxygen and nutrients to the heart; also known as atherosclerosis.
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism – It occurs due to blood clots in veins, which may travel to different parts of the body.
  • Heart attack – When the heart stops supplying blood to a certain part of its muscle, we refer to it as a heart attack.Heart attack symptoms include chest tightness, pain, nausea.
  • Heart failure – When the heart doesn’t pump blood as strongly as it should, then the medical condition is called a heart failure.
  • Heart valve disease – Valves are at the exit point of the four chambers of a heart. These maintain the flow of blood from one chamber to the other. Heart valve related health disorders are aortic stenosis, mitral valve insufficiency, and mitral valve prolapse.
  • Pericardial disease – It is an infection that causes the inflammation of the lining of the heart.
  • Peripheral vascular disease – It narrows the blood vessels and thus, restricts the blood circulation.
  • Rheumatic heart disease – It is caused due to rheumatic fever, which is an inflammatory disease. It damages the valves of the heart. This generally occurs in children.
  • Stroke – It occurs when the blood flow from the heart to the brain stops or slows down. The brain fails to get nutrients and oxygen, hence some brain cell dies. It may happen due to heart blockage, artery blockage or leaky blood vessels.
  • Vascular disease (Blood Vessel Disease) – It refers to any disease that affects the circulatory system.
Signs & Symptoms

Some signs and symptoms of CVD are:

  • Overwhelming weakness and fatigue
